Advanced Digital Network Infrastructure in Europe
The future competitiveness of Europe's economy depends on these advanced digital network infrastructures and services, since fast, secure, and widespread connectivity is essential for the deployment of the technologies that will bring us into tomorrow's world.
The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative of Europen Union aims to put in place the key technological building blocks of tomorrow’s Internet and to shape the future Internet as an interoperable platform ecosystem that embodies the values that Europe holds carefully: openness, inclusivity, transparency, privacy, cooperation, and protection of data. The goal is to empower users with the freedom of choice among a range of open-source decentralised digital solutions.
NGI is among the EU initiatives that directly contribute to the development and uptake of digital commons in the area of internet technologies.
The Wikimedia platform success with its open solutions empower these initiatives.
2021 - Workshop and survey conclusions
The participants to the consultation clearly endorsed the ‘agile’ NGI approach of using
cascading funds, for both the selection of projects and the support measures provided to
them, because:
cascading funds, for both the selection of projects and the support measures provided to
them, because:
- subproject selection is fast and efficient, which is especially good for small players;
- an option to apply ‘as individual’, over ‘as company’ brings in new ideas and new talent;
- the current ‘basic building blocks’ approach is very ‘resultsoriented’; and
- getting paid as soon as work is done is fast and efficient.
Further quality improvements can be made in:
- the selection, review, and especially in the ‘integration’ and use of the subprojects’ results;
- in balancing the basic ‘technology orientation’ with more significant ‘human-centred’ deeper investigation.
